This Gorge Hike Is One of New York’s Most Scenic

If you’ve ever hiked a trail that makes you stop and stare at every turn, you’ll know the feeling I’m talking about. That’s exactly what it’s like on the Gorge Trail at Letchworth State Park. Nicknamed the “Grand Canyon of the East,” it’s packed with stunning waterfalls, towering cliffs, and a winding river—easily one of the best ways to experience New York’s natural beauty in one place.

Letchworth State Park stretches along the Genesee River, where it winds through a dramatic gorge formed during the last Ice Age, about 10,000 to 12,000 years ago. Located about an hour south of Rochester, the park covers more than 14,000 acres and is open year-round for hiking, biking, paddling, and camping. If it’s your first visit, the moderate Gorge Trail (also called Trail No. 1) is the best way to experience it. This main trail runs about seven miles one-way, leading you right along the edge of the gorge with views of some of the park’s most iconic scenery.

The hike begins near Upper Falls, accessible via the Portageville Entrance, where you’ll hear the roar of the river before you see it. A massive steel arch railroad bridge spans the gorge above the falls. From there, the trail follows the rim, winding through shady woods and breaking open now and then to views of the cliffs and river below. Not far along, you’ll reach Inspiration Point, one of the park’s most famous overlooks and a great place to stop and take it all in.

A little farther down the trail, you’ll come to Middle Falls—the biggest and most powerful of Letchworth’s waterfalls. At 285 feet across and 107 feet tall, it’s an impressive sight. It’s easy to linger here, with several viewpoints, including Parsons Point, that let you see the water crashing down into the canyon. On sunny days, you might even catch a rainbow in the mist. There are benches around if you want to take a break and enjoy the sights.

Beyond Middle Falls, the trail will get quieter. You’ll walk through stretches of dense forest, always with the river below. The sound of rushing water fades in and out as you move along the gorge. Eventually, you’ll reach Lower Falls, where a set of stone staircases takes you closer to the river’s edge. A footbridge spans the water here, and it’s one of the most peaceful spots in the park. The climb back up can be a little tough, but it’s worth it to stand by the river and look back at how far you’ve come.

Trail conditions are generally good, though rain can make the stone steps slippery. Sturdy hiking shoes are a must, and you’ll want to bring water and snacks, especially if you plan to hike the full 14-mile distance. Dogs are welcome on a leash, and restrooms and picnic areas are available near popular spots like Inspiration Point and the Glen Iris Inn.

Parking is also easy to find, with several lots close to the trailheads, including at the Portageville Entrance (6849 Park Rd, Castile, NY 14427). There is a small entrance fee to access Letchworth State Park, which helps maintain the trails and facilities.
