The Stunning Landscape In New York That Appears As Though It Was Ripped From A Thomas Kinkade Painting

The landscape that is the Dunkirk Lighthouse and its views of Lake Erie look like they are straight out of a painting. The views are both beautiful and historical, and for anyone in New York, it's well worth trying to making the trip to see it in person—even, or especially, from afar. Located at Point Gratiot, the lighthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places, and is a crown jewel on the coast of Lake Erie. We believe that it might just be the best lighthouse view in New York. To learn more about this special destination, keep reading, below.

Though the lighthouse was originally created in 1826, the most contemporary iteration of the tower was first lit in 1875. It was then automated in 1960. To this day, it remains in operation.

The views of Lake Erie from this lighthouse are about as good as it gets. The lighthouse itself, too, is a picturesque portrait in its own right.

Then there is the Dunkirk Veteran’s Museum. The second floor of the original keeper’s house is dedicated to a museum honoring each of the branches of the armed forces and the Coast Gard. There is also a hallway with an exhibition focusing on the Vietnam war.

A little more history: The first shot of 1812 War was fired close to the lighthouse's west side.

The Dunkirk Lighthouse also has collaborated with the Dunkirk Pier-head light, which helps to guide ships into its harbor. Over the years, five separate towers have served as the head light.

The lighthouse has tours, during the fall, spring and summer seasons.

Just look at that view! It's one of the best sights in the entire state.

For those in the mood for an amazing landscape that looks like it could be out of a work of art, and also happen to be in the general Buffalo area, it's worth checking out the Dunkirk Lighthouse. It provides a portal to a different time and place; it's an interesting look at not just New York history, but American history at large. And, while in Buffalo, why not check out Ulrich's 1868 Tavern, which is the most historical bar in all of the city. Looking for a good place to stay in the area? We recommend the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Buffalo Downtown.
