It's only natural that some places fall through the cracks and don't get as much attention as they probably deserve. One underrated park in New York that we absolutely love is the Betty and Wilbur Davis State Park in Westford. This hilltop oasis spans 223 acres in beautiful Otsego County. It's filled with a gorgeous hardwood forest, and has amazing views and an expansive system of hiking trails. This is a fantastic and peaceful spot for a day trip that doesn't get as many visitors as some of our better-known parks.
This gorgeous state park in New York gets around 16,000 visitors each year. Compared to the six-to-seven figure numbers that see Letchworth State Park or Niagara Falls State Park annually, that isn't much at all.
The park isn't far from Cooperstown and has a number of amenities. There's catch and release ponds, as well as plenty of hiking trails.
In 2006, fully furnished log cabins were added and are now available for rental. Camping at a state park in New York is a great way to really immerse yourself in the experience of visiting our natural wonders.
The 2.8-mile Andy's Trail is a beautiful loop that circles the park. It's an easy trail that's a good option even for novice hikers or families with younger children.
There's even a bathroom halfway through the loop. There's also a playground on the path to let the kids get some energy out.
The park has plenty of varying terrain throughout, so you'll never get bored while exploring these 200+ acres.
Betty and Wilbur Davis State Park is particularly striking in the snow. Snowmobiling and cross-country skiing are popular activities here in the wintertime.
