I love exploring zoos. These animal facilities have changed so much since the old days, now specializing in rescue and rehabilitation in many cases and keeping the animals in safe and roomy enclosures with plenty of opportunities for enrichment. Even many of the older zoos have been heavily revamped over the decades, like Ross Park Zoo in Binghamton, which is actually the fifth-oldest zoo in the United States. This zoo is also home to the only red panda encounter in New York, taking the fan-favorite animal and letting guests who sign up for a special experience to get up close with them and even feed them. These adorable critters are only one reason why the Ross Park Zoo should on any New York animal-lover's list for day trips!
The Ross Park Zoo has a retro feel, but this animal center is well-worth visiting for a variety of unique animal encounters.
There are dozens of animal species here, ranging from reptiles and primates to even big cats.
One of the most popular recent additions is the Pallas Cat - a small, fluffy, and very expressive wild cat known for its comical expressions.
There's even a penguin refuge - something which is very welcome to visit on hot summer days!
But when it comes to visiting animals at the zoo, I always make a beeline towards one place - the red panda enclosure.
These fuzzy, docile, vegetarian critters are among the cutest animals at the zoo - and you can get closer to them than you think!
There's a special Red Panda encounter offered here, for an additional fee, that lets you learn more about these loveable animals and even safely feed them with fruit on a stick.
The zoo prioritizes the red pandas' safety and comfort, so petting is not allowed.
You might not be able to take a Red Panda home (alas), but you can get a stuffed one at the gift shop!
