This Speakeasy Hidden Inside a Bookcase Door in New York Is Perfect for a Date Night

There's nothing quite as cool as spending the evening in a hidden-away speakeasy with some of the best food and drinks in town.

205 Dry in Binghamton takes a bit of work to get into. First, visitors have to enter what looks like a typical bookstore or cafe. Then, they have to find one bookcase that is different than all the rest—a bookcase that actually functions as a door. From there, visitors are brought into a very special bar, one that provides an experience that will be hard to forget, even after a drink or two. The whole experience makes for one of our favorite bars in the state, and easily the best speakeasy in Binghamton, New York.

Step Inside a Hidden Speakeasy

205 Dry is a hidden speakeasy that opened in 2018. It’s the baby of Binghamton’s Alise Willerton, who is also the owner of Uncorked Creations, an art studio that exists upstairs from the bar. The space has a classic speakeasy feel, meaning the bar must be discovered before it can be enjoyed.

Once visitors find that special bookcase, though, they will be transported into a space that conjures up feelings of the 1920s. The room is filled with antiques, fresh flowers, books, and candles—and that’s not to mention its beautiful bar. The music that gets played often includes versions of contemporary music played in that classic 1920s style. The whole vibe is a mixture of old and new.

What To Order at 205 Dry

The food focuses on bar classics, with a classy twist. We love the OG Chicken Sandwich—a fried chicken sandwich presented with slaw and pickles. The Prohibition Burger, which features custom dry-aged beef, is quite tasty, as well. There's also a steak that's said to be one of the very best in the area. Not a meat-eater? No problem! There is a delightful vegan garden and grain bowl.

The cocktail menu is also impressive, with over 30 craft cocktails to choose from. We love 205 Dry's take on the Old Fashioned, created with Knob Creek. There are additionally around 10 craft beers available on tap. For an old-timey drinking experience that goes above and beyond what the typical New York bar provides, we suggest taking the trip to Binghamton and checking out 205 Dry, the best speakeasy in Binghamton, New York.
