A unique blend of otherworldly southwest beauty and vibrant history, New Mexico's dramatic landscapes are also home to a surprising number of scenic lakes, waterfalls, and bodies of water. From the powerful, iconic course of the Rio Grande to the scenic banks of the Jemez, there's no shortage of idyllic spots to kick back and enjoy the abundant sunshine. After all, we're called the Land of Enchantment for a reason! One of those reasons is New Mexico's magnificent ability to keep surprising us over and over with its hidden gems and dazzling, under-the-radar scenery. For those who seek something a little more remote, special, and beautifully preserved, getting off the beaten path to discover the magic of New Mexico's Lost Lake is an absolute must-do.
Set amidst the rugged peaks of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Red River, New Mexico is ideal for adventures both big and small. But with perfect multi-season weather, stunning high mountain lakes, and abundant flora and fauna, this area is also the perfect place start to exploring New Mexico's most spectacular terrain by foot.
Lost Lake in New Mexico is a stunning hidden gem that sits around 11,000 feet and is a brilliant example of the kind of beauty offered by a high alpine trek.
Important Note: The altitude and lengthy climb to Lost Lake also make this destination more challenging than our usual hiking adventures, although the trail itself is only rated as moderate. With such a high elevation, this trail is not for beginner hikers or those not acclimated to the altitude.
The 11-mile out-and-back trail to this pristine lake starts at the Middle Fork Lake trailhead and follows beautifully diverse terrain up the mountainside.
A gentle creek will keep you company as you traverse steep slopes and cross a number of switchbacks.
Above the treeline, breathtaking panoramic views await. In season, you'll also see wide meadows overflowing with wildflowers.
Even from a distance, Lost Lake beckons with its blue water and gorgeous, nestled-in setting.
But up close, the pristine surroundings really shine.
Like something out of the PNW, the crystal clear spring-fed lake is nothing short of brilliant, beckoning visitors to dip their toes.
Shady trees to tuck into and colorful alpine foliage will make the extra effort to get here totally worth it.
All that's left now is to enjoy the view!
As part of the Carson National Forest, Lost Lake is open for dispersed camping, but please follow all Leave-No-Trace principles and camp a respectful distance from the water to protect the environment (at least 300 feet). We want to keep this brilliant oasis pristine for decades to come! If you've ever visited Lost Lake or tackled the Lost Lake Trail in New Mexico, let us know your best tips to make this scenic adventure even better. (Hint: a GPS app comes in handy!)
Editor's Note: Before planning your adventure, be sure to check current conditions for fire, seasonal, and maintenance closures. The forest service website is regularly updated with this information. Happy trails!
