There are so many things in life to celebrate -- a wedding, an anniversary, a job promotion...the list is endless. But a favorite occasion to celebrate is certainly a birthday and we're all invited to one! Did you know that Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico turns 100 years old in 2023? If that isn't something to celebrate, we don't know what is.
Carlsbad Caverns National Park was established on October 23, 1923, which means that on October 23rd this year, it will be turning the big 100!
This celebration is undoubtedly a big deal as it marks an entire century in that its nearly 47,000 acres of beauty and natural wonders have been protected.
If you have yet to visit this wondrous national park, maybe 2023 is the year. After all, how many centennial celebrations have you had the honor of partaking in?
Because it's been protected, millions of people have had the opportunity to visit and enjoy all that the park has to offer over the years.
In addition to 119 caves, Carlsbad Caverns National Park is home to a wide variety of mammals that includes 17 species of bats as well as 357 bird species, 55 amphibian and reptile species, and nearly 900 species of plants.
As part of the celebration, there's an exhibit at Lake Carlsbad Recreation Area to check out. In a joint partnership with the Carlsbad Public Library and the City of Carlsbad NM Government, 20 interpretive exhibits with information on the park, how the caves were formed, and other fascinating information is on display.
Announcements for activities and events will be announced on the National Park Service's website as well as Carlsbad Cavern National Park's Facebook page throughout 2023. Check each so you can better plan your trip to celebrate the park's 100th anniversary!
