Spending time outdoors is essential for many of us. I love spending time in nature as much as possible because it calms my soul, and if you add in a natural wonder, I'm one happy girl! However, I am not much of a hiker so when there's a unique natural attraction not too far off the beaten path, that's a win for me. If you love nature but aren't in the mood for a long hike, there's one short trail in New Mexico that leads to a natural wonder you'll want to see.
Located within the Valle Caldera National Preserve is Sulphur Springs, a natural wonder worth seeking out. This area is teeming with geothermal activity, and luckily, it doesn't require much of a hike to get to.
Now, while the hike to the springs isn't long, it's a bit of a drive to get to the trailhead.
You'll have to drive along Forest Road 105 to get to the Sulphur Springs Trailhead at mile marker 27. There is a gate at the trailhead marked VC08.
You can park your car at the dirt pull-out next to the trailhead.
Sulphur Springs Trail is a 0.3-mile trek down a forest road. Along the way to the springs, you'll encounter signs of the area's sulphur mining past.
This was also once the site of a hot springs spa and health resort. You'll see abandoned structures dotting the landscape.
There are also abandoned vehicles around here as well. This is quite a remarkably fascinating trail to explore, so I urge you to take a camera and snap some pics.
Not to far down the road is Sulphur Springs where you can marvel at the natural hot springs. And be aware that sulphur is quite an off-putting smell like rotten eggs. However, this is an area with a geothermic natural wonder, and it's certainly worth visiting!
Note: Please exercise caution while you're here as it's an environmentally sensitive area. The water is also quite acidic so do not attempt to bathe in the springs.
