Enjoy A Secluded Stroll On A Little-Known Path Along This Iconic New Mexico River

New Mexico's landscape is quite varied. From deserts to woodlands, from canyons to mountains, there are some epic hikes to tackle throughout the state. But if you crave being by the water, there's a secluded hike in New Mexico that runs alongside one of the state's iconic rivers. Let's discover the Vista Verde Trail in the Rio Grande Gorge!

While getaways are great, so are hikes. Both leave us renewed and refreshed but hiking also connects us to nature. If you're in the mood for a hike in a secluded area with views, the Vista Verde Trail is hard to beat.

For this hike, make your way to the Rio Grande Valle in Ranchos de Taos. The trailhead is found between the Taos Junction Bridge and the Gorge Rim.

While this can be a popular hiking and mountain biking trail, there are times during the day when it's quiet and you may have it to yourself.

This out-and-back trail is approximately 2.5 miles long and is rated easy on AllTrails. There's only a 229-foot elevation gain as well, but the trail is flat most of the way.

The trail will take you along the gorge with some of the most stunning views above the river. At one point in the trail, you'll find a bench where you can sit and soak in the scenery.

You won't be able to get enough of the views here. They are utterly spectacular!

Views aside, another incredible aspect of this trail is the number of petroglyphs you'll see. These symbols were carved in the rocks by Native American tribes as well as Spanish travelers centuries ago, and are a remarkable sight to see.

You should also keep your eyes peeled for bighorn sheep! They are often spotted along this trail, and I think that is awesome!
