Tucked away in the town of Raton by the Sangre de Cristo Mountains is a park that was once home to a mine. At nearly 200 acres, Climax Canyon Park is a hidden gem park in New Mexico that's ideal for a day hike. If nature, views, and wildlife are what get you out on the trails, you must visit this park!

If you're in the mood for a day hike here, take the Climax Canyon Nature Trail. At 3.1 miles long and 446 feet of overall elevation gain, this trail is rated as "easy" on AllTrails.

The well-marked trail loops through the park in a figure-eight formation that will take you to sweeping vistas of the high plains, mesas, and mountains.

You'll also have a bird's eye view of downtown Raton at some point along the way.

While this hike will take the average hiker just over an hour and a half to complete, if you want to spend more time here, just take your time, take it all in, and stop to take in the views.
