It’s almost unfathomable that anything good could exist at the site of a previous volcanic eruption, Valles Caldera National Preserve. But that’s exactly the case at this hidden gem attraction that’s perfect for nature lovers in New Mexico.
If you’re planning a visit to this incredible national park, there’s no better time to visit than during National Park Week. Learn all about this celebration of America’s great outdoors — including fee-free days throughout the year!
This amazing place is a 13-mile wide circular depression that was created from an astounding volcanic eruption many years ago, and the landscape scenery is breathtaking from every direction.
The largest grass valley in Valles Caldera, called Valle Grande, is covered with a thick blanket of assorted wildflowers, grasses, and rushes. Words and pictures cannot adequately capture its beauty.
There are endless opportunities for exploration and recreational activities, including fishing in one of the rivers running through the preserve …
… as well as hunting elk and turkey.
You can also go horseback riding or hiking. This is the stunning view from the hike to the summit of La Garita, allowing you to see the vast expanse of the remnants of this ancient volcano.
There are many trails to choose from, ranging from easy strolls to steeper climbs.
Or perhaps you would prefer lower key activities. There are all types of wildlife to look for and observe. Bluebirds are a common sight.
But you could see a variety of other bird species and wildlife, including prairie dogs, badgers, coyotes, rabbits, and more.
You can also attend an astronomy event or gaze at the stars on your own.
See the National Park Service’s website for much more information and to plan your visit.
