The Clearest River In New Mexico, The Gila, Is Almost Too Beautiful To Be Real

The headwaters of the Gila River are high in the Black Range of the Gila National Forest. The river flows wild and free in New Mexico, creating the most beautiful landscape in the state. The Gila supports plant and animal life along its banks that are so stunning and diverse that it was designated the first primitive area by the US Forest Service in 1924. Then the area received the first Wilderness designated by the Wilderness Act of 1964.

The Gila is a living thing that can create Class III whitewater in one area and the most serene clear stream in another.

Middle Fork Gila River Trail is a great way to spend the day near the river, enjoying the cool, crisp, clear water.

Stop at the Gila Visitor Center before heading to the trailhead.

The National Park Service manages the Visitor Center. It does an excellent job of educating visitors about the ancient people who lived in this magical area for thousands of years. You can also visit the Gila Cliff Dwellings.

The trailhead and the river are a short drive from the Visitors Center.

Middle Fork Gila River Trail is 11.1 miles out and back. However, you do not need to hike the entirety of the trail to enjoy the beauty of the river. Instead, pack a backpack with a picnic and plenty of water and set out to find your perfect river home base. From here, you can explore the trail further or dunk your feet in the water and enjoy a good book.

The water is so clear you can watch the fish swimming in one of the still pools.

You'll find primarily brown trout here on the Middle Fork of the Gila River. The fishing opportunities aren't great in this area, but the kids will have a blast giving it their best effort.

The water trickles and spills over rocks, creating this stunning oasis's mesmerizing soundtrack.

As you watch the crystal clear water of the Gila River, it's easy to understand why ancient nomadic people would return to this area over and over.

There are several campgrounds nearby if you want to stay and be a part of all this beauty a little longer.

Upper and Lower Scorpion Campgrounds are within walking distance of the river. So you can roll out of your sleeping bag early and enjoy the cool mountain air as you sip your coffee in one of the most beautiful places in New Mexico.

This Gila River experiences high water levels in the spring when the snow melts. Flash floods are also possible during summer storms. Therefore, it is essential to know the weather forecast for the area you are staying in and the areas up the river.
