El Morro National Monument In Ramah, New Mexico Is So Little-Known, You Just Might Have It All To Yourself

El Morro is an underrated national monument in Ramah, New Mexico with an imposing bluff, petroglyphs, hiking trails, and more.

Located in Ramah, New Mexico, El Morro National Monument is overseen by the National Park Service. It's home to just over 1,000 acres and has less than 70,000 visitors each year. You could have this place to yourself when you visit!

Head to the Visitor Center when you first arrive for trail information and to ask the rangers or volunteers any questions you may have.

Facilities are available to use here, and there are also exhibits that take you through the history of the El Morro area. There are also two trails here at El Morro, and each one begins at the Visitor Center.

One trail, the 0.5-mile Inscription Loop Trail, is an accessible and paved trail that will lead hikers past petroglyphs and a pool. The second trail is two miles long and is named the Headland Trail. It takes you up to the top of the impressive Morro Bluff and is a moderate-to-strenuous hike due to elevation gain.

This area is rich in history, but it seems as though not many people know about it. If you're looking to explore a hidden gem in New Mexico, this is the very definition of one.

Over the centuries, ancestral Puebloans, Spanish travelers, and even early American settlers have carved petroglyphs, messages, and signatures into the rocks here at El Moro National Monument. Spend some time taking in the evidence people have left behind.
