This Gorge Hike Is One of New Jersey’s Most Scenic
The Mount Tammany Red Dot Trail is a tough but rewarding hike with killer views of the Delaware River and Mount Minsi. It's perfect for those looking for a challenge and some epic scenery.
I’ve always loved hikes that challenge you but reward you with incredible views, and the Mount Tammany Red Dot Trail is a perfect example. Located in the Delaware Water Gap area, it’s one of the most iconic gorge hikes in New Jersey. This demanding climb offers a highly satisfying payoff, with spectacular views of the Delaware River and Mount Minsi on the opposite side—the Pennsylvania counterpart to New Jersey’s Mount Tammany. For experienced hikers or those seeking a bigger challenge, this trail is definitely worth experiencing—it showcases the rugged beauty of Worthington State Forest, nestled within the larger Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.
The hike begins at the Dunnfield Creek Natural Area parking lot off I-80 West. From there, the trail climbs steeply right away, gaining about 1,200 feet in elevation over roughly one mile. You’ll find the terrain is consistently rocky, with a few sections where you might need to use your hands for balance—a bit of light scrambling. It’s a climb that will definitely challenge your endurance.
Along the ascent, you’ll reach two main viewpoints. The first, appearing about half a mile up, offers impressive views of the Gap and the surrounding forest. It’s a wonderful overlook and a reasonable turnaround point if you need a shorter hike.
For those continuing to the summit of Mount Tammany, however, the view from the top is certainly worth the effort—a breathtaking panoramic scene featuring Mount Minsi across the Gap and the Delaware River winding through the deep gorge below.
When choosing your route, you have a couple of options. You could hike up and back down using the Red Dot Trail. However, the common approach, and often recommended, is to make it a loop. This involves ascending via the steep Red Dot and then descending using the Blue Dot Trail. The Blue Dot is a more gradual, though longer, descent, which can be easier on the knees. This route also takes you alongside Dunnfield Creek near the end, where you can enjoy the woods and some small cascades. Following this path, the entire loop comes out to about three miles.
Now, let’s talk about what this hike demands. Regarding the difficulty, it’s strenuous. The steep grade and rocky path require proper hiking footwear with good ankle support and traction. Carrying sufficient water is essential, too. Hiking poles can also be very helpful here, particularly for adding stability on the descent. A word of caution for families with young children or those unaccustomed to difficult trails: this hike presents genuine challenges that need careful consideration. Even so, the feeling of accomplishment upon reaching the summit viewpoints makes the journey that much sweeter and worthwhile.
If you’re planning to experience this yourself, arriving early is key. Parking is very limited and fills extremely quickly, especially on weekends and holidays. It’s also crucial to check current trail conditions before you leave home, as wet weather can make the rocks slippery and conditions more hazardous.
