Willowwood Arboretum in Far Hills, New Jersey, offers a unique combination of historic buildings and rare plant species, making it a must-visit destination.
As the weather gets cooler and the leaves change, it's the perfect time to explore New Jersey's backroads and hidden gems, and they don't get any more hidden than Willowwood Arboretum. Located in the tiny town of Far Hills, with less than a thousand residents, I found this historic gem of a public park and garden - and it might just be the best arboretum in New Jersey. Its roots date back to 1792 when the initial farmhouse was built, and it was developed by the property owners into a home for rare and exotic plant species. The unique arboretum was turned over to the Morris County Parks System in 1980, and is now open to the public daily, completely free of charge. A unique location full of historic buildings, stunning plants, and public art, it's a one-of-a-kind destination that all New Jersey residents should visit.
