See The Tallest Waterfall In New Jersey, Buttermilk Falls
Buttermilk Falls, the tallest waterfall in New Jersey, is easily accessible and located in the Delaware Water Gap Recreation Area.
New Jersey is mainly known for its coveted ocean beaches, but there's far more to the Garden State than its shores. And while we have some pretty challenging waterfall hikes, the tallest waterfall in NJ is easily accessible from the parking lot. If you have yet to spend time at Buttermilk Falls, we'll give you a few good reasons to explore the area.
Buttermilk Falls is located in Layton, part of the Delaware Water Gap Recreation Area.
This beautiful recreation area is a wildly underrated part of the state that shares a border with Pennsylvania.
Several trails will take you past the waterfall, but the fastest way to reach it from the recreation area is simply by climbing this steep staircase.
The easy 1.5 mile Buttermilk Falls Loop is another beautiful choice to reach the biggest waterfall in NJ.
Buttermilk Falls is 85 feet tall, making it the tallest waterfall in New Jersey.
For reference, Niagara Falls is about 167 feet tall.
This is one of the most popular waterfalls in the state, mainly because it's easy to reach.
However, we're betting its tranquil beauty also has something to do with it.
Walk around the recreation area and you'll also see a sturdy (but sometimes slippery) observation deck that will allow you to look from another angle.
The entire area is definitely worth exploring -- it's worth taking it all in from the top.
Though it's impossible to predict the weather, it's best to visit Buttermilk Falls shortly after a rainfall.
While this area is always stunning, it feels especially magical after it has rained. Plus, the smell of the fresh air is indescribable.
A trip to Buttermilk Falls is fantastic in any season. However, it's especially enchanting in the autumn.
While you might see people swimming here in the summertime, you'll be just as content to enjoy a picnic while watching the cascades.
Another beautiful area to explore is Lake Hopatcong in NJ. Take a quick peek at this video showing the lake on a bright sunny day:
Have you been to Buttermilk Falls lately? We highly recommend you visit the tallest waterfall in NJ at least once. If you simply love a good waterfall like we do, there are plenty more wonderful falls in the Delaware Water Gap Recreation Area.
