This New Hampshire Wildlife Sanctuary Is One Of The Best Places To View Summer Wildflowers
Florence M. Tarr Wildlife Sanctuary in New Hampshire offers a peaceful wildflower hike with beautiful Mountain Laurel blooms.
New Hampshire winters can be long and that's why it's always a joy to see color come back to the forest. I love seeing the trees and plants returning to life, and the burst of color as the wildflowers reappear for another season. For me, it's a big part of what makes being out in nature so peaceful and calming. Straddling the towns of Bedford and Goffstown is a wildlife sanctuary that is the perfect destination for a wildflower hike in NH.
The Florence M. Tarr Wildlife Sanctuary lies in Bedford and Goffstown. The property spans over 300 acres and was created by lifelong Bedford resident Florence Tarr.
The sanctuary provides an opportunity to walk through varied forest types and to explore quiet beaver ponds.
The centerpiece of the sanctuary during summer is the Mountain Laurel along Lo Flo Trail. This flowering plant is found in mountainous forest areas.
Mountain Laurel flowers grow in clusters and are normally hexagonal in shape with a light pink or white appearance.
Even in springtime and early summer before the flowers bloom, walking amongst the Mountain Laurel is still a magical experience.
Lo Flo Trail meanders gently over rolling terrain on the lower slopes of Holbrook Hill. The trail makes a loop of 1.8 miles.
Continuing on through the sanctuary leads to the summit of Holbrook Hill. There are no views here but it has the distinction of being the highest point in the town of Bedford.
