With so many natural wonders in New Hampshire, it can be difficult to decide where to start exploring. I, for one, love all the water features and waterfalls in New Hampshire. And, to me, water features are the best when out hiking. I find that walking alongside a brook, waterfall, or pond is one of the most soothing parts of being out in nature. Plus, I could listen to the sound of flowing water all day. You may have some interesting water features near you, but for the most impressive sights, you'll need to take a trip to the mountains. For fans of New Hampshire waterfalls, one "giant" cascade is worth the visit from anywhere in the state.
Giant Falls is tucked away in a tiny corner of the Mahoosuc Range in the scenic mountain town of Shelburne.
Giant Falls is located along the tranquil Peabody Brook. This brook begins high in the Mahoosuc Range and flows down into the Androscoggin River.
The hike to this NH waterfalls begins along Peabody Brook Trail on North Rd. in Shelburne. A 0.3-mile spur path leads to the falls, for a total one-way distance on 1.5 miles.
Peabody Brook Trail provides not only pleasant walking alongside its namesake brook, but also plenty of fine forest scenery.
As with any waterfall viewing, the best time to visit Giant Falls is during the spring snowmelt or after a sustained period of rain.
While not the tallest waterfall in New Hampshire, it is among the highest drops at around 150 feet and is an impressive sight from the bottom.
Before heading out on the trail, be sure to have the proper gear and footwear for a safe hike. We also recommend taking along AllTrails Plus to help with navigation.
