You’ll Never Forget This Hike To An Unrivaled Peak In Nevada

Nevada has many incredible mountain hikes but one of the most impressive is Wheeler Peak in the Great Basin National Park. Hikers can experience a beautiful alpine woodland experience leading to amazing views from over 13,000 feet.

Wheeler Peak is the second highest peak in Nevada, topping. The peak is just 81 feet below Boundary Peak, the highest in the state.

The mountain is 13,063 feet high and hikers will face an elevation gain of approximately 2,900 feet over the course of 4.3 miles.

The trail is about 8-1/2 miles and is considered hard, though hikers report it's fairly gradual going up. The last mile is steep and requires rock scrambling. The elevation change increases the challenge for people not used to it. The peak is also known for inclement weather, including lightening storms, so it's important to go on a clear day.

Hikers can enjoy seeing local wildlife, such as mule deer, wild turkeys and more along their way up.

The trail winds through aspen groves and meadows and in the spring wildflowers abound in the meadows.

Gentle creeks are a part of the hike experience along the peak's slope, as well a stop at Stella Lake.

Visitors will love the brilliant aspen tree colors in the fall. The trail is usually closed around November through May due to mountain snows so be sure to visit early in the fall.

Bristlecone Pines are spread throughout the trail as well. Many of these trees are thousands of the years old.

The views from the summit are truly stunning and makes the challenge going up worth it. The summit is fairly level and there's plenty of room to relax and have some lunch or rest up before the long trek down.

Hikers can see awe-inspiring 360 degree views of the Great Basin National Park and Snake range from the top of the peak.
