Grab the Wool Socks for this Hike In Nevada that’s 100% Worth Braving the Cold
With the appropriate clothing and quiet trails, winter can be the best time of year to go hiking in Nevada.
Not everyone loves braving the cold weather during the winter months in Nevada. However, it happens to be my favorite time of year to go hiking. Why? Well, there is barely a soul out on the trails so it's peaceful, there's that crispness to the air that I love, and there are no insects. Sure, it's cold but with the appropriate clothing and the fact that about 10 minutes into a hike you can warm up rather quickly, it's the best time of year to be outside for a winter hike in Nevada.
Now, there's that saying, "There is no bad weather, only bad clothing," and I find that to be true, at least to a point. When spending time outdoors during the winter in Nevada, you want to make sure you wear clothing and accessories that will keep you warm. So, grab your wool socks and other winter gear, and hit the trails! And if you're curious about one of the best winter hikes in Nevada, I suggest the Five Valleys Viewpoint via Clear Creek Trail in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.
There are so many reasons why this trail is such an epic one any time of the year — it's easy enough for most people to enjoy, the elevation gain is less than 500 feet, and the scenery is gorgeous, especially from the overlook. While the Five Valleys Viewpoint via Clear Creek Trail is popular from spring through fall, you may find a bit of solitude during the winter months.
This out-and-back trail is 5.8 miles. When the temperature is low enough, you'll find snow and patches of ice on the ground. In addition to hiking shoes or boots, you may also want to wear micro spikes for extra traction — you don't want to slip on your hike! When there's enough snow on the ground, snowshoeing is an option you'll have on the Clear Creek Trail as well. Snowshoeing happens to be one of my favorite ways to explore trails in the winter!
As this trail is six miles in length, that may be too long of a trek for some. However, AllTrails has rated it as moderate so you decide for yourself if this is a winter hike in Nevada you can tackle.
