The Mummy Spring Trail in Nevada has an rather unusual name, but you'll love the ancient beauty you find on this challenging hike.

There are lots of fantastic hiking trails all over Nevada, and if you're like me, you want to try every one of them! Trails in Nevada traverse mountains, cross deserts, and venture deep into beautiful forests. Most of the names of Nevada's best trails describe exactly what you'll see along them or where they will lead you. Some, however, are a bit more CRYPTIC—pun entirely intended.

The Mummy Spring Trail has an unusual name. Certainly, as you might have guessed, it leads to a spring. However, its curious name may invoke images of being chased by zombies covered in muslin fabric, too! This trail is rated as challenging, but don't worry—it's not because you'll encounter any risen-from-the-dead monsters along the way. You'll find your effort worth it when you see the views and the trees on this hike.

The Mummy Spring Trail is in the Mount Charleston Wilderness near Mount Charleston, Nevada, northwest of the fabulous lights of Las Vegas. It's also not far from Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, so if you hustle, you can check out both places in a single day.

The trail is a 5.9-mile, out-and-back trail with 1,853 feet of elevation gain. It takes most hikers close to four hours to complete, so be prepared ahead of time to hike. This hike is a major draw not just because of its unique name, but because it explores a beautiful ancient forest. Along your route, you will see bristlecone pine trees that are over 3,000 years old.

The trail is very steep and rocky, with an elevation gain of nearly 1,900 feet. You'll want to wear hiking boots to ensure your safety and footing. Come prepared for a long and strenuous hike, including plenty of water. Dogs are welcome on this trail, but you must keep them on a leash. Fortunately, there are many shaded places to stop and rest on this hike if you need them.

You'll see lots of wildflowers along this route, too. When you get to Mummy Springs, you'll be impressed with how quiet and serene this area is. Take some time to relax and take it all in before you head back the way you came.

You won't encounter any actual mummies on the Mummy Spring Trail. The trail was named for Mummy Mountain, which looks like a mummy in repose. However, you will see many great views and some extremely cool and interesting trees that are older than humans can imagine. You'll love this challenging trail and be glad you took it on when surrounded by the immense natural beauty all around you. Have a great hike!
