A unique hike around Lake Tahoe leads you to sweeping views and an incredible rock formation known as Castle Rock. The hike is short and relatively easy but also nice and secluded, making it perfect for when you want a quiet adventure in the wilderness above Tahoe. The hike to Castle Rock above Lake Tahoe is a wonderful adventure when you feel like a short but sweet hike with incredible views. Located near Stateline, Nevada, this is a hike you'll want to be sure to add to your to-do list!
The Castle Rock Loop is just 2.8 miles total with an elevation gain of about 200 feet. It's an easy trail that's great for hikers of all skill levels. The leisurely hike through the woods also provides climbing access for rock climbing at Castle Rock.
Parking for Castle Rock is available before the Kingsbury North Trailhead off of SR 207. From here, you'll hop on to the Tahoe Rim Trail and follow it for about a mile. You'll then turn left at the Castle Rock junction.
Following this short spur trail, you'll be led straight to the rock formation known as Castle Rock. From here, you can climb about 300 feet to the base of Castle Rock Summit. The view from here is breathtaking and worth every extra step!
Castle Rock is a notable rock climbing spot and it's no wonder why. The views of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest are just divine. If you're an experienced climber, you can attempt the climb to the actual peak for an even more impressive view.
If it's solitude you're after, you're bound to find it on this lovely trail. Despite its simplicity, the Castle Rock trail remains lesser-known than other hiking trails in the area. It makes for a nice, peaceful walk in the woods.
