It should be every Nevadan's goal to make some time to experience our state's beautiful landscapes. After all, we live in an extraordinarily beautiful state and it'd be such a waste to not explore it! If you have yet to experience this delightful 20-mile train ride through the Nevada backcountry then you'll definitely want to add it to your bucket list. The nearly two-hour excursion shows off some of our state's most breathtaking landscapes. At the same time, the old-fashioned charm of the historic train is bound to charm you and make you feel as if you've traveled back in time to a bygone era. Take some time to experience our state how it should be experienced—via train!
The Nevada Northern Railway is a lovely little railroad museum located in the quaint town of Ely. The museum is dedicated to preserving the artifacts and equipment of the Nevada Northern Railway which is cited as one of the best-preserved 20th-century railroad yards in the nation.
Visiting the museum is like traveling back in time to Nevada's early days. All of the railroad's buildings and locomotives seem to be extraordinarily preserved. It almost seems like no time has passed at all.
However, one of the museum's most amazing features is the 1.5-hour train ride that takes passengers from Ely to Keystone. Passengers will depart the historic station in the same fashion that the trains have been doing for over a century. This isn't just a sightseeing tour. It's a tour through history.
As you leave the station the train will start to head southwest, leading you through two tunnels and up several mountain grades in Robinson Canyon. During this short amount of time you'll observe some of the most stunning desert scenery. The sight of the bright blue sky over the rugged canyon and neverending desert plains is something that just can't be beat.
Each train features on-board restrooms and wheelchair access. Snack and beverages are also available for purchase. They've got everything covered for you. All you have to do is sit back and take it all in!
Passengers have their choice of coach or open-air seating. You may even feel free to roam in between the two. The coach is nice and cozy but the open-air carriage offers a splendid experience that can't be describe. Just imagine yourself whizzing by these landscapes with nothing obstructing your view of the beautiful scenery.
Every so often, the train actually gets held up by a band of "outlaws". These hardened criminals will give you a real Wild West experience that is sure to entertain both kids and adults. These special train rides are indicated by the word "Robbery" in the event title when you purchase your ticket, so be warned!
Tickets for the train ride include a tour and can be purchased for $31 for adults and $15 for kids (kids under 4 are free). Afterwards, feel free to explore the Railyard, Enginehouse, and museum. This is a charming experience that every Nevadan is sure to love. For more information, visit the Nevada Northern Railway website here.
