Did you know that the first week in May is National Wildflower Week? It's probably not an event that most people keep track of, but it is a great excuse to get out and see some lovely flowers. Here on the prairie, however, our wildflowers bloom on a slightly different schedule.
Here, we celebrate Wildflower Week a month later than the rest of the country to coincide with the blooming patterns of our unique prairie wildflowers. In 2017, it's June 1st-11th.
There are events all through the state to celebrate these little jewels of nature, but one of our favorites is the Wildflower Walk and Talk at Agate Fossil Beds.
The walks are happening on June 4th and June 11th at 2:00 pm. They'll start out at the Visitors Center theater and follow the one-mile Daemonelix trail.
The informative walks are led by an Agate Fossil Beds ranger who will tell you all about the flowers along the trail. You'll fall in love with the hardy but delicate flowers that thrive out here.
You'll also learn about the history of the flora in the area, including the relationship between Native Americans and the plants they used for a variety of purposes.
There are identifying markers all along the Daemonelix Trail identifying the wildflowers, and displays in the Visitors Center give even more information.
This is the perfect opportunity to enjoy one of the most beautiful parts of Nebraska while learning a bit about our state and the plants that make it so special.
As an added bonus, the waving prairie grasses at Agate Fossil Beds are also lush and lovely in June. When the wind blows, it almost looks like a silver-green ocean waving.
There is no cost for the wildflower walk. Learn more about the Nebraska Wildflower Week Walk and Talk at the National Park Service website.
