The Most Romantic Valentine’s Day Hike You’ll Find in Nebraska

Hikers of Nebraska, rejoice: This jaw-dropping hike offers incredible views and might just be the most romantic hike in the state.

If someone were to ask you what you consider a "romantic" activity, I bet you'd think of all the traditional stuff first: chocolates, candles, bubble baths... you know, the works. But for some of us, that kind of stuff doesn't do it (or isn't enough); for some of us, one of the best things to do with a special someone is to get out and enjoy nature. I found an incredible hiking trail in Nebraska that's perfect for a romantic day hike - with just you, your person, and the countryside.

Welcome to the Lake Ogallala Trail, an amazing trek within the Lake Ogallala State Recreation Area. Like many hiking trails in Nebraska, this hike is nice and easy - folks with mobility issues should have little to no problem conquering this one. It's no slouch, though - at nine miles long, it makes for an excellent full-day adventure with the right person. The lake views are a delight year-round, but they get a little more unique in the winter - go ahead, rest your head on your partner's shoulder, and simply take it in. It's ridiculously serene.

The trek leads you along the shores of the lake; on the western side, the trail is gravel and rock (though, thankfully, flat). On the eastern side, the trail is dirt - but beware: there are sand burrs here (also known as "goat heads"), so wear sturdy shoes, and if you're planning to bring your pup, they are allowed - just make sure they have booties of their own. Even when the trail is covered in snow, they can be present - so be careful!

Ultimately, should you hike the entire 4.5 miles to the trail's end, where you'll end at the Ogallala Dam. The views on the whole hike are to die for, though many points throughout the journey would be a great backdrop to ask your partner for their forever. From there, you'll return the way you came - perhaps as an entirely new couple.

Should you decide you don't want to leave, there's a campground at the Lake Ogallala State Recreation Area; even in the winter, it makes for a wonderful experience. Few things are more romantic than snuggling by the fire; bonus points if you've got s'mores and cocoa.

Oh, and be sure to come back once it's warm outside; this entire region is stunningly beautiful, and in my opinion, it only becomes more so when the foliage is thriving. Still romantic, too!
