My Favorite Park in Nebraska Is a Little-Known Oasis for Birding
Branched Oak State Recreation Area in Nebraska is hot spot for outdoor recreation. Many don't know it's also a birding oasis.
The Cornhusker State is home to eight incredible state parks, five national wildlife refuges, two national monuments, and numerous other public lands managed by the state, federal, and local governments. Folks flock to these natural and historic areas for everything from hiking and camping to walking in the footsteps of our forebears. Sometimes a place can be particularly well-known for certain activities but also a low-key hot spot for others. Take, for instance, Branched Oak State Recreation Area. It's home to the largest lake in eastern Nebraska and offers myriad recreational opportunities across its 5,600 acres. Visitors come for boating, fishing, camping, and traversing the park's 16 miles of trails on foot, horseback, or mountain bike. One thing that isn't high up on the list of activities Branched Oak SRA for which is known is birding. The thing is, though, the park teems with interesting bird species all year long—and especially during migration.
One of the park's best spectacles during spring migration is the congregation of dozens of bald eagles along the shores of Branched Oak Lake. They rest up and hunt the lake's chilly, early spring waters before continuing on their way northward. Rafts of snow geese often start showing up shortly after the arrival of the eagles.
Full-on migration follows when hundreds or even thousands of birds stop and use the park every day for several weeks. In the fall, the whole spectacle repeats in reverse. Meanwhile, species like wild turkeys, red-tailed hawks, red-bellied woodpeckers, and American white pelicans, can be found in the park throughout much of the year. This makes Branched Oak SRA an awesome place to spend a day or weekend birding in Nebraska in any season.
If you do choose to make it an overnight adventure, ample camping opportunities are available at Branched Oak State Recreation Area, which boasts a total of 338 pad sites as well as rustic camping locations across nine public use areas. You'll find more information about reserving a campsite at the Branched Oak SRA page on the Nebraska Game and Parks website. If you're looking for a little more in the way of creature comforts, several vacation rentals are available in the area, too, like this two-bedroom, one-bath cottage near Raymond. The property can accommodate up to four guests, and it's only five minutes away from the recreation area. Check out the cottage's listing on Airbnb to see more photos and book your stay.
If you enjoy birding and wildlife watching as much as I do, Branched Oak State Recreation Area should be on your Nebraska must-visit list. This little known Nebraska state park (for birding, anyway) has much to offer its visitors, which is why it's one of my favorites in the state.
