The Iconic Trail in Nebraska Everyone Should Hike Once in Their Lifetime
This iconic trail in Nebraska offers footbridges, a lake, and peaceful wooded paths for an easy and memorable hike.
Hidden away from the world in Nebraska are countless amazing places, sights to see, and things to do. Whether you're a fan of the outdoors or prefer sticking to city limits, there's something for everyone here. This state is a hidden gem through and through, and every hiking trail in Nebraska is a perfect example of that.
The Schramm Park State Recreation Area is a wonderful little respite from the real world that you can visit—and hike—year-round. My favorite times to go tend to be spring and early summer (and autumn, of course), but it's also a solid destination for outdoor fun in the winter. As luck would have it, there are plenty of trails around here, too—ideal for spending an afternoon somewhere undeniably beautiful.
Coming in at just over two miles, the Schramm Park Nature Loop is rated easy to slightly moderate and takes about an hour (unless you choose to stop along the way, which I highly recommend). There’s plenty of shade, but be sure to bring water anyway. Hydration is key, friends! The trail is mostly wooded and well-maintained, so most hikers will find it very manageable, and dogs on leash are welcome, too.
It's hard to overstate how delightful this trail is. Surrounded by lush greenery from trees and bushes of all kinds, this hike features an awesome footbridge, a suspension bridge, a lake, a fish hatchery, and more. It’s a whole day trip wrapped into a short loop, and it’s no wonder people keep returning. It’s wonderfully peaceful, with endless chances to clear your mind. Nebraska has no shortage of hiking trails, but this one stands out in its own special way.
It's easy to get turned around here, but don’t worry—stick to the path, and you won’t get truly lost, even if the park feels worlds away. In reality, it’s located in the small town of Gretna, Nebraska, with parking areas available at the park and restrooms facilities conveniently nearby, offering a great way to enjoy the outdoors without venturing far.
With so many little offshoots and side trails to explore, you can happily spend a full day here, and I wouldn’t blame you. Nebraska is beautiful, even if it doesn't always get the recognition it deserves. Where some see “boring,” I see something extraordinary—and with every hike, I hope you fall in love with the Cornhusker State a little more. Soon enough, you’ll wonder why you ever wanted to leave.
Before you hit the trail, be sure to check out the Schramm Park Nature Loop on AllTrails for maps, directions, reviews, and current conditions. And if you’re serious about hiking and want a tool that makes planning easier, AllTrails Plus is a game-changer—I honestly don’t know how I managed without it.
