This Spring Is Forecast To Be The Most Active Tornado Season Nebraska Has Seen In Years

We're certainly no strangers to tornadoes here in the Cornhusker State. We're right in "Tornado Alley," a nickname for the part of the country where tornadoes occur most often. It stretches from Texas up into South Dakota, including all but the very northwestern tip of Nebraska. This year, the tornado forecast is looking even more active than usual.

Through the years, spring and summer have brought some historic storms through Nebraska. The worst of them turn into tornadoes that rip through towns and destroy everything in their path.

The Easter Sunday tornado of 1913 was one of the most memorable and deadly. More than 100 people lost their lives that day. More recently, a cluster of tornadoes caused widespread destruction in 2018.

Hopefully we won't experience anything quite so serious this year, but the number of tornadoes is expected to surpass our yearly average.

AccuWeather has predicted that the month of May will bring the most tornadoes this year, but the season stretches out for several months beyond May. It's important to be vigilant throughout this spring and summer.

It's also important to be aware of the watches and warnings that may occur. Remember, a tornado watch means there might be a tornado, and a tornado warning means that you'd better seek shelter.
