After Exploring The Trails, Be Entertained By Prairie Dogs At Greycliff Prairie Dog Town State Park In Montana

If you have spent the day (or week) exploring the splendor that is Montana and find yourself passing through on Interstate 90, we have an outstanding suggestion for a pit stop. Stretch your legs, and be charmed by black-tailed prairie dogs at Greycliff Prairie Dog Town State Park. The adorable antics of these animals are worthy of a quick detour in your comings or goings across the southeast corner of the Treasure State.

Greycliff Prairie Dog Town State Park is located in Greycliff, right off of I-90. The park contains 98 acres and sits at an elevation of 3,600 feet.

For Montana residents who pay the extra state park fee with their vehicle registration each year, entrance to the park is free.

Bring your camera and your binoculars to get the full effect of watching these ridiculously cute rodents doing their thing.

Unless the weather is inclement, you should be able to easily spot some of these little guys popping up out of their holes.

You will hear the prairie dogs sounding the alarm (chirping) to alert the others when visitors arrive.

The park is open all year for day use. From November 1 through April 1, cars are not permitted in the park, but visitors can walk in.

Plenty of informative signs at the park describe how these playful fellows benefit the prairie ecosystem.

There are no restrooms here, but head to the nearby town of Big Timber for facilities, including restaurants and gas stations.

Are you looking for inspiration from some local trails in Montana? Drinking Horse Mountain Trail is a moderately challenging, 2.1-mile loop near Bozeman.

Bighorn Canyon, straddling the states of Montana and Wyoming, offers approximately 17 miles of hiking trails and killer views.

You may be fortunate to come upon bighorn sheep or wild mustang horses.
