Get a glimpse of Missouri's natural history when you visit Big Oak Tree State Park in East Prairie, a more than 1,000-acre state park that's home to towering trees and wetland.
The best way to admire the park's natural beauty is along the boardwalk trail, an easy path that tallies just three miles.
One of the highlights of the scenic trail, the tunnel of trees - a mix of majestic oak and hickory - stands more 120 feet high.
On sunny days the golden sunbeams shimmer through the tree branches, giving off a magical aura.
You can even sit along one of the perfectly-placed benches to admire the views.
This is a trail that certainly deserves a visit in each season.
Educational placards provide information about some of the park's trees. Don't venture off of the boardwalk as there's an abundance of poison ivy, and keep an eye out for snakes.
If you're bringing your pup along ,be careful along the boardwalk trail as little feet can get stuck in the grates.
Because the trail meanders through wetland, you'll likely see a variety of wildlife.
