Katy Trail in Missouri offers a unique 240-mile hiking adventure with scenic views and multiple trailheads for flexible exploration.
Our beautiful state is known for some downright epic hiking trails, but one might stand out from the rest - Katy Trail in Missouri. Because it spans 240 miles, it promises a one-of-a-kind adventure, whether you plan to hike it all in one big journey, or you go on shorter jaunts. No matter how you tackle this unique Missouri trail, you're in for an unforgettable experience that will give you a peek at some of the best that Missouri has to offer.
Known as the longest rail trail in the United States, the Katy Trail tallies a whopping 240 miles. It travels from Machens to Clinton.
Since traversing 240 miles at one time can prove pretty challenging, the rail trail offers 26 trailheads that make it easy to complete the entire trail on your own time and at your own pace.
The scenic trail follows what was once the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad. Most of the trail follows along the Missouri River, so you know you're guaranteed spellbinding views.
You don't have to hike the epic trail either. Biking and horseback riding are also permitted.
The majority of the trail is handicap-accessible with wheelchairs, segways, and electric golf carts allowed on the path. (However, motorized vehicles are prohibited.)
You'll definitely want to plan enough time to follow the trail AND to explore the many destinations that are just off of this popular path.
Plan time to visit the many wineries, restaurants, and shops that sit just off of the trail.
If you are up for the challenge of following the trail in one fell swoop, be prepared. From November 1 through April 1, water and restrooms are not available.
