This Cave Hike Is One of Missouri’s Most Unique Trails
Explore two jaw-dropping caves on this epic adventure at Meramec State Park in Missouri. It's got tons of fun for everyone!
I consider myself a nature lover, so it’s fair to say that I enjoy spending time outdoors. Hiking can be very rewarding, and I feel at peace when I hear soothing melodies of the outdoors. The birds chirping, the murmurs of a flowing stream, and the leaves swaying after a gentle breeze, I love it all. Since I am a casual hiker, I prefer short trails that lead to a big payoff. That’s exactly what I love about the Walking Fern Trail at Meramec State Park near Stanton, Missouri. The half-mile hike leads to a cool cave that you must see for yourself. Come with me on this unique cave adventure in Missouri.
Did you know that there are over 40 caves (yes, 40!) inside Meramec State Park? The most popular is Fisher Cave. For a small fee, hikers can explore the underground world with an expert naturalist. The tours last about 90 minutes, and you’ll see jaw-dropping formations, bats, salamanders, and other cave dwellers. It’s a great alternative if you want to skip the crowds at Meramec Caverns.
I recommend the tour, but there is another natural wonder that you can explore for yourself. Indian Cave is located on the Walking Fern Trail right next to Fisher Cave inside the park. Since the hike is short and sweet, only taking about 20 minutes to complete, why not combine the two caves for an epic experience?
You can choose your adventure here! Want to see the cave first? Take a right (counterclockwise) at the trailhead, cross the wooden boardwalk, and you’ll see the steps leading to the cave. If you’re like me and would rather end with your reward, head in the opposite direction.
Either way, you’ll hike through narrow paths inside the tree-covered woodlands with sharp elevation changes. True to its name, expect to see limestone bluffs draped with walking ferns. The shrubs get their name because of how they creep across the rocky surfaces. You’ll have no issues recognizing them.
Be sure to carve out some time to stop at the overlooks to take in the views of the area. Eventually, you will make your way to the steps—the cave entrance. The opening is formed by a large rock outcropping that leads into a cavern with a chamber that takes you into the dark crevices.
Leashed pups and mini outdoor adventurers are welcome on this hike. They will love exploring the cave to see the unique rock formations and discover what kind of critters might be inside. Bring a flashlight or use your cell phone light—it should be fine. The best part? You might have the cave and the trail all to yourself. If you ask me, this underrated cave adventure in Missouri belongs on your list.
Pro Tips: Keep your eyes peeled for snakes and deer, and don’t leave your bug spray at home - you’ll need it for this trek. The good news is that the path is well-marked and easy to follow. You should wear sturdy hiking boots, and it wouldn’t hurt to have your trekking poles either. After a good rain, there might be slick areas that can be a bit tricky to navigate.
