Mooner's Hollow Trail in St. Francois State Park offers a picturesque hiking experience with natural beauty year-round.
Nature always seems to find a way to surprise us, especially when we're hiking. We might run across a sleeping fawn, pass a tiny waterfall, or even catch an unexpectedly brilliant sunrise or sunset. Natural surprises await just about everywhere you turn on this scenic hike in Missouri that's picture-perfect no matter what time of the year you hike it.
Mooner's Hollow Trail, which spans three miles through St. Francois State Park in Bonne Terre, starts off on an enchanting note: you'll cross a wooden footbridge that will begin your journey along the picturesque trail.
You can easily stay on the path by following the blue blazes.
The trail promises natural beauty all year round, but it's particularly pretty when the forest trees are a lush green, providing a protective shield from the sun.
When you're not among the forest trees, you'll pass by colorful wildflowers - perfect for a selfie backdrop or to just take a moment to smell the flowers.
The flowing Coonville Creek is particularly pretty with sunbeams dancing off of it, and it boasts a beautiful...
...waterfall! Be forewarned, however, that after heavy rain, the trail often floods, causing its closure.
If you are hiking in the winter or after a rain, expect some muddy spots. The trail features a slight incline, earning it a moderate rating.
Mooner's Hollow Trail is also dotted with rock outcroppings, and you might even run into some native wildlife.
