Tishomingo State Park Is the Single Best State Park in Mississippi and It’s Just Waiting to Be Explored
Tishomingo State Park is considered the best state park in Mississippi due to its unique terrain, rich history, and various outdoor activities.
There are a lot of great state parks in Mississippi. However, only one can be the best, and according to Travel and Leisure, that distinction goes to Tishomingo State Park. It’s not hard to see why the park was picked. It boasts some of the most unique terrain in the entire state – and that’s in addition to all the typical state park perks. With so much to offer, it’s the perfect place for your next outdoor adventure.
Tishomingo State Park is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Tishomingo County. It's the perfect place for nature lovers to visit! There are plenty of hiking trails and beautiful scenery to enjoy. Since it's right at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, the region is much more hilly than you'd expect in Mississippi. It's one of my favorite places in the state.
Opened to the public in 1939, it was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Many of the park’s original facilities and structures are still intact.
Remarkable geography is a hallmark of the park. The towering rock formations and huge sandstone outcroppings that fill the park can’t be found anywhere else in the state. In fact, it’s the only place in Mississippi where you can go rock climbing. Remember, a permit is required. Visit the official Tishomingo State Park website to learn more about rock climbing.
The unique terrain isn’t the only thing that makes Tishomingo State Park the best state park in Mississippi, though. A rich history is also among its amazing features.
Archaeological excavations confirm the presence of Paleo-Americans in present-day Tishomingo State Park as early as 7,000 B.C.! Today, detailed wood carvings pay tribute to the Native American tribes that once inhabited the area.
Miles of trails make it easy to explore all Tishomingo State Park has to offer. As you meander along the well-marked paths, you’ll be led to the park’s best sites, including its famous swinging bridge.
Spanning Bear Creek, the bridge boasts some great views, especially in the fall. Mississippi isn't known for its vibrant fall foliage, but this little corner of Mississippi is the exception!
You can do more than admire Bear Creek from afar, though. Tishomingo State Park offers canoe trips on the creek, supplying everything needed for a fun float.
There are also picnic areas with grills, playgrounds, a volleyball court, a swimming pool, and a 45-acre freshwater lake.
To truly get the most out of your time at Tishomingo State Park, consider spending the night in one of the park’s cabins or camping out in its campground.
