Most People Have No Idea This Incredible Natural Wonder Is Hiding Right Here In Mississippi
Of all the incredible natural wonders in Mississippi, the Sky Lake Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is undeniably one of the best. Located in the small town of Belzoni, the area spans thousands of acres and is home to some of the world’s largest and oldest cypress trees. Even better, the ancient forest is now easily accessible thanks to a boardwalk and paddling trail. Brimming with history and beauty, Sky Lake is a hidden gem that’s worth seeking out. Take a look:
Open year-round, Sky Lake WMA is located at 1692 Townsend Lake Road in Belzoni.
At the entrance of Sky Lake, you’ll find maps and information about the area, ensuring you don’t miss a thing during your visit.
Please note: Users of the Sky Lake boardwalk and headquarters area are exempt from having a state-issued Wildlife Managerment Area user permit.
The 3,500-acre area is brimming with natural beauty and incredible sites, which include enormous bald cypress trees.
Among the largest on the planet, the giant trees vary in size, with one of the biggest measuring 47’ in circumference.
Some of the trees are over 1,000 years old, making their age just as impressive as their size.
When it comes to exploring Sky Lake, you have two options – the boardwalk or paddling trail.
Situated 12’ off the ground, the 1,700’ boardwalk takes you directly through the ancient forest, offering exceptional views of the trees, swamp, birds, and other wildlife.
Along the way, you'll find plenty of signage that provides information about the history of Sky Lake, its bald cypress trees, Native Americans of the area, and other topics.
For adventure-seekers, the paddling trail is definitely the way to go. The 2.6-mile trail offers spectacular views and is well-marked, making it easy to navigate.
Keep in mind, the best time to paddle is from late fall to early summer when water levels are highest.
