Explore The Boardwalks At Yazoo National Wildlife Refuge In Mississippi For A Unique Outing
Yazoo National Wildlife Refuge offers beautiful scenery, a butterfly garden, and wildlife observation areas, making it a perfect spot for nature lovers and hikers.
Looking for the perfect place to get in touch with nature? Well, look no further than Yazoo National Wildlife Refuge. An ideal spot for hikers and nature-lovers alike, the refuge features beautiful scenery, a butterfly garden, and wildlife observation areas, which are perfect for viewing the alligators that call the refuge home. Luckily, there are trails and a boardwalk that make it easy to explore the area and all it has to offer. Take a look:
Yazoo National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is located in the heart of the Mississippi Delta. More specifically, it’s in Hollandale, which is about 25 miles south of Greenville.
The Butterfly Garden is one of the refuge’s newest additions, and with lots of colorful butterflies and caterpillars, it’s and a must-see.
September and October are the best times to visit the garden, since that’s when the butterflies and caterpillars are most active.
But it’s not just butterflies you’ll find at the refuge. There are also plenty of alligators, which you can easily view thanks to the refuge’s observation areas.
One of the refuge’s observation areas is located at the end of the Holt Collier Boardwalk.
At just ¼-mile, the boardwalk is suitable for hikers of all ages and skill levels.
Definitely worth the effort, it leads across a slough straight to an observation platform, where you can safely view gators as well as ducks and wading birds.
Another observation area can be found at Alligator Pond. This one is an open-sided observation tower, so you’ll be treated to elevated views of the surrounding area.
Just as the name implies, the pond is home to alligators, so a gator sighting is likely.
You’re probably wondering if the refuge is safe with all those gators running around.
Well, rest assured. According to the refuge’s website, no visitor has ever been hurt by an alligator. It went on to say, "…but if you should come across a nest, please keep your distance."
With gator sightings as abundant as the beautiful surroundings, you're practically guaranteed to have a wildly good time at Yazoo NWR.
