It's as good a time as ever to reminisce about some of the wildest winter storms ever observed in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. We all remember the 1991 Halloween Blizzard, but there are plenty of other memorable snowstorms to look back on, too. For example, did you know that 1994 saw the largest single snowfall ever in Minnesota? Read on to learn about this historic storm and its impacts:
If Minnesota is known for one thing, it's our cold and snowy winters. On average, Minnesota gets 30 to 75 inches depending on the region.
While the snow may be difficult for some out-of-towners, it's a way of life for Minnesotans. Even when the snow is past our knees, we always get out and enjoy it.
But there are some instances when even native Minnesotans grow weary of the weather. That was likely the case during Minnesota's single largest snowstorm way back in January of 1994.
During a cold wave throughout the United States January 6-8 that year, Mother Nature decided it was high time for a dumping of snow. The little northern town of Finland was the site of the snowfall.
The storm dumped a record 46.5 inches on Finland, Minnesota. This beat the previous record of 36.9 inches in Duluth during the 1991 Halloween blizzard.
The massive storm made some rural roads impassable. It took hours for plows to make the rounds to every area affected.
More than 20 years later, the storm goes down as Minnesota's single largest snowstorm.
