Explore Breathtaking Rolling Hills And Prairie Views When You Visit The 136-Acre Seven Sisters Prairie In Minnesota

Minnesota is known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes. We're famous for these bodies of water, as well as for the vast forests that surround some of the most beautiful lakes. But did you know that our state was once home to 18 million acres of prairie? Prairie lands once filled the western and southwestern reaches of Minnesota.

Today, only around 1% of the original prairie remains, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The DNR is working to protect the prairie as a whole, and other organizations are making efforts to protect sections of it. One such section is a place known as Seven Sisters Prairie, which is preserved by the Nature Conservancy. This prairie is absolutely beautiful and much different from Minnesota's most famous landscapes. Below, you'll find more information about this wonderful place, including how to visit it yourself:

Seven Sisters Prairie is a 136-acre nature area in Otter Tail County, Minnesota. It lies outside of the tiny town of Evansville, about 150 miles northwest of Minneapolis.

The area is a landform called gravel prairie, a prairie with soil that contains a lot of gravel. The rolling hills of this gravel prairie rise 190 feet above the surrounding landscape.

A narrow, dirt path leads to the hilltop. it is a steep, unpaved climb, so be sure to bring comfortable shoes if you plan to make it to the top.

Along the way, you'll see plenty of plant life. There are three kinds of grass that are not usually found in Minnesota, which is the easternmost edge of their range.

In warmer months, you may also find colorful wildflowers. They provide a picturesque backdrop for photos taken at this beautiful site.

When you reach the top of the hill, you'll be greeted by a wonderful sight. On a clear day, you can see for miles around. Below, you'll have amazing views of Lake Christina.

This small but lovely lake plays host to many different species, including migratory birds. Ducks, orioles, and lark sparrows make homes here!
