This Lake Itasca Footpath Is One Of The Best Waterfront Hikes In Minnesota
Next time you're looking for a relatively easy waterfront hike with significant geographic and historic significance, head up to Itasca State Park, near Park Rapids, and hit the Schoolcraft Trail. We think this state park footpath is one of the best waterfront hikes in Minnesota.
You'll find the Schoolcraft Trail in Itasca State Park - the oldest and second-largest park in the system.
The trail starts on Lake Itasca, at the iconic headwaters of the Mississippi River.
It's a wide, level 2.1-mile out and back trail, with a short loop at the end.
The trail takes you along the western shore of Lake Itasca's North Arm.
You'll walk through a mixed Northwoods forest, enjoying pine, spruce, aspen, and birch as you go. Look for wildflowers in the spring and summer.
At the southern end of the trail, you'll be treated to views over the lake to Schoolcraft Island, along with a placard describing its significance.
The trail is open year-round, and with its level terrain, it's perfect for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
After your hike, you will definitely want someplace nearby where you can settle in and relax.
Mimo's Beauty Lake Cabin is an affordable lakefront cabin rental that's just minutes from Itasca State Park.
With rates as low as $125 per night, you could make this 2-bedroom cabin your Heartland Lakes area base camp.
And what a way to end a gorgeous day in the Northwoods!
This trail is a perfect hike to enjoy with a pet or children - it's not too long or difficult for them, but it's enough to make the hike worthwhile. Plus, you'll be in one of the most beautiful areas in the state, and there's a whole lot to explore in Park Rapids and the Itasca State Park area.
Have you hiked the Schoolcraft Trail? Would you agree that it's one of the best waterfront hikes in Minnesota?
