Minnesota is not known for its impressive geological structures. The state isn't home to soaring mountains, mysterious buttes, or delicate arches. But that doesn't mean the Land of 10,000 Lakes is free from geologic points of interest. From the pink quartzite cliffs of Blue Mounds State Park to the beautiful Sawtooth Mountains, there are geological wonders throughout the state. One that is often overlooked is Niagara Cave in southern Minnesota. This otherworldly destination is one of the most unique places in the state. Here's what you'll find when you visit:
Niagara Cave is a unique attraction in Harmony, Minnesota. This little town is in Fillmore County, about 130 miles southeast of the Twin Cities.
The cave is privately owned, but tours operate every day during the tourist season. It is usually open throughout the spring, summer, and fall.
What makes this cave unique? It's a limestone cave 200 feet below the surface of the earth. The cave was cut by water flowing through the area for millions of years.
There is still water in the cave today. The most famous feature is a 60-foot waterfall. Though it is a thin stream, it is still fascinating to see an underground waterfall up close.
Many of the other features were formed by water, too. You'll see evidence of flowing water just about everywhere you look. Along the walls of the cave, small ripples in the rock have formed over millions of years.
On the ceiling, stalactites have formed by dropping water over millennia. And because this cave still contains water, the features keep growing.
At 200 feet below ground, there are even fossils in the walls! You'll have a chance to get a good look at creatures who lived long ago.
Next time you're in the area, take a tour of this otherworldly piece of Minnesota geology. With a waterfall, stalactites, and ancient fossils, there so much to discover.
