It’s no secret that Minnesota isn’t exactly known for impressive peaks, soaring summits, or even rolling hills. Sure, there are a few cliffs overlooking Lake Superior and bluffs lining the Mississippi River. These are awe-inspiring in their beauty, but they’re not quite the Rocky Mountains. Minnesota may never reach those heights, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have mountains of our own. Most people don’t realize that Minnesota is home to its very own mountain range. Take a look:
Along Minnesota’s North Shore, the Sawtooth Mountains stretch 30 miles from Tofte to Grand Marais. The mountains are named for their distinct sawlike appearance.
The range overlooks Lake Superior, creating a breathtaking view from the top of the mountains…
…and an equally gorgeous view at a distance.
The range includes several notable peaks, including Carlton Peak, which is accessible via Temperance River State Park.
Moose Mountain is a little further north near Lutsen. This peak reaches 1,689 feet above sea level.
Other prominent peaks include Leveaux Mountain and Oberg Mountain. Both summits can be reached by a 3-mile trail accessible from the same area in Superior National Forest.
No matter which part of the Sawtooth Mountains you visit, you’ll have something to do. There are three state parks along the way, including Cascade River, Temperance River, and Judge C.R. Magney.
These parks have hikes, waterfalls, and rugged rock formations that will leave you in awe of Minnesota’s natural beauty.
Along the way, you’ll have the chance to see Minnesota wildlife in its natural habitat. Look for eagles, deer, moose, and many other animals as you explore Minnesota’s beautiful mountain range!
