You Won’t Want To Miss The Most Eye-Popping Lady’s Slipper Bloom In Minnesota This Spring

Spring tends to come a little later in Minnesota than in many other places, but by April, we start to see some lovely wildflowers popping in the southern part of the state. However, if you wait just a bit longer - toward the end of May and into June, when spring starts thinking about putting on its summer clothes - you'll be treated to my favorite wildflower bloom in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. It's this time of year when we start to see lady's slippers in Minnesota, and there's one spot, in particular, where they're not only spectacular, they're incredibly accessible. Head on up to the Lady Slipper Scenic Byway and see for yourself!

The Lady Slipper Scenic Byway runs between Blackduck and U.S. Route 2 on the east side of Cass Lake.

Starting in late May and running through June, keep your eyes peeled and scan the roadsides for lady's slippers, which are orchids that are native in Minnesota. In fact, the showy lady's slipper is our state flower.

As you reach Pennington township, just north of where the byway crosses the still-tiny Mississippi River, you'll find a rest area.

It's more than just a rest area, though.

It's an interpretive site where you can learn all about these magnificent flowers.

There's also a boardwalk trail into the boggy woods where you can see them up close for yourself.

During the late spring, orchids bloom all along the boardwalk.

In late May and early June you'll start to see pink lady's slippers.

Yellow lady's sippers - both large and small - start to arrive around then, as well.

Later in the season, in mid-June, start looking for the stars of the show: showy lady's slippers.

It's always wonderful to hit that mid-June sweet spot when you'll find all of the varieties in bloom at the same time!

Plan to make a trip to the Lady Slipper Scenic Byway this spring - I know I am. With its location right on the edge of the Chippewa National Forest, this part of the state is simply gorgeous - and it's perfect for a weekend getaway.
