Polar Vortex Headed For Michigan: Arctic Temps And Major Snowfall Expected
Winter storm Decima and a polar vortex are causing severe weather and flight cancellations across the northern and eastern U.S.
Winter storm Decima is making its way across the U.S. and over the weekend will team up with a nasty polar vortex, a mad rush of bitterly cold air dashing down from the North Pole. The two will wreak havoc in must of the north and northeast, including Michigan!
The result? A low pressure system that could freeze any slush already standing around and then dump a nice eight to twelve inches of new snow from below Detroit all the way to northern Michigan.
How does a Polar Vortex make things worse?
That rush of cold air will keep temps below average all weekend, with temps bottoming out Sunday night. Lows will be in the single digits Sunday night and wind chills well below zero. Expect a big freeze over much of the state.
Michigan is no stranger to frigid weather conditions. The double-whammy of Decima combined with the polar vortex will make for some treacherous conditions.
Folks are being encouraged to stay indoors and limit travel as the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Advisory for all of Michigan for the weekend.
Near blizzard conditions are expected at many airports throughout the northern and eastern U.S. As a result, many airlines have already begun to cancel flights.
Stay alert to winter weather advisories in your area, and be sure to heed travel advisories.
