You don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to appreciate a gorgeous stroll through the great outdoors. Luckily for us, Metro Detroit is home to some of the most breathtaking forested hikes that lend themselves perfectly to visitors of all skill levels. If you’re searching for a few beginner-friendly hikes to check out, here are a few that belong on your must-visit list.
1. Paint Creek Trail (Lake Orion)
If you’re searching for a leisurely hike that stretches for miles and offers a variety of sections to explore, Paint Creek Trail will capture your heart. In total, the pathway extends for 8.9 miles and follows the path of Paint Creek itself, which offers an extra dose of serenity to the area. With a beginning point near Lake Orion and a variety of stopping points in Northville, Rochester, and more, this trail is unique.
2. Stage Nature Center Trails (6685 Coolidge Hwy, Troy, MI 48098)
The trails at this gem of a nature center in Troy will take you on an outdoor adventure unlike anything you’ve ever experienced. Whether you’re a wildlife enthusiast or a stressed-out parent searching for a place to unwind, you’ll find plenty of peaceful forested splendor here. For a healthy dose of foliage, check out the ever-popular Sugar Maple Loop.
3. Rosie’s Park Loop (1111 E Farnum Ave, Madison Heights)
This one-mile loop is perfect for a quick daylight hike that will brighten your spirits. It’s family-friendly and just extensive enough to help your kids express their energy without wearing them out entirely. When you stroll along Rosie’s Park Loop, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a fairytale, complete with towering trees and chirping birds. Be sure to snap a few family photos along the route!
4. Ann Arbor Ramble Trail (3000 Fuller Rd, Ann Arbor)
Whether you complete the entire 5.9-mile loop or break it up into a shorter stroll, you’ll immediately fall in love with Ann Arbor Ramble Trail. After all, this lovely spot features riverfront views, wildflowers during warmer months, and unparalleled access to the many natural attractions of Gallup Lake Park. Dogs are also allowed on the trail, so long as they are leashed.
5. Crosswinds Marsh Park (27600 Haggerty Rd, New Boston)
While Crosswinds Marsh is home to its fair share of forested wetlands, the fun doesn’t stop there: in fact, nature lovers will be thrilled to find that this gem near Detroit also houses peaceful marshes, ample opportunities for birdwatching, and an equestrian trail. Beginners will love the half-mile Woodpecker Loop Trail, which promises to deliver all sorts of wildlife encounters.
6. Hudson Mills Hike and Bike Trail Loop (8801 N Territorial Rd, Dexter)
This 3-mile loop is especially beautiful during autumn when fall colors offer a sense of vibrancy to the area. The pathway is paved, making it perfect for beginners or those who simply forgot to bring along their hiking boots. 7. Nichols Arboretum Loop (1610 Washington Heights, Ann Arbor)
If you’ve visited Ann Arbor, you’ve surely explored the many wonders of Nichols Arboretum. Fondly known as "the Arb" by locals, this one-of-a-kind outdoor attraction is home to ample hiking opportunities, including the Nichols Arboretum Loop. There’s a magical quality to this 2.6-mile loop, which remains open year-round and takes visitors through some of the prettiest forestlands in Metro Detroit.
8. Eberwhite Woods Loop Trail (Ann Arbor)
Check out this wooded area near Eberwhite Elementary School for a fun family adventure that can be completed in just an hour or two. The terrain here is flat enough for beginners and the trail itself comprises a 1.5-mile loop that will take you on a journey through some of Metro Detroit’s loveliest nature. Leashed four-legged friends are allowed, so why not make it a family affair?
9. Woodland Hills Loop (26655 Farmington Rd, Farmington Hills)
There’s a quiet vibe along this 1.8-mile loop in Farmington, which frequently features wildlife like deer and birds. The trail takes visitors through plenty of forestlands, though the terrain is often muddy following rainfall — so be sure to wear a nature-friendly outfit. Dogs must be left at home, but the rest of the family will surely have a blast exploring this pretty spot.
