The Sandy 3.6-Mile Hike at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Worth the Sweat
Explore the Dune Climb Trail at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Michigan.
Don’t let your dreams of romantic sandy beachfront walks fool you. The 3.6-mile Dune Climb Trail at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Michigan is no joke. With just shy of 650 feet of elevation gain, this trek has you battling up and down challenging sand dunes. That said, the views of Lake Michigan throughout the route are more than worth the sweat.
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore spans more than 71,000 acres. Within those acres are more than 35 miles of Lake Michigan shorelines on the mainland. With nearly 250 bird species and more than 900 plant species, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is one of the best spots to get outside in Michigan.
The Dune Climb Trail is not for the faint of heart. Despite its relatively short distance, the hike takes an average of 90-120 minutes to complete. Although some hikers have said it may take less experienced hikers as much as three to four hours. Folks will find themselves face-to-face with massive sand dunes that require a respectable amount of strength and cardio to get up. However, one of the best parts of this route is that you're rewarded with views of Lake Michigan throughout the journey.
Your adventure begins at an inland parking lot across the street from Little Glen Lake. From there, you'll have to trek through about 1.8 miles of sand and greenery before reaching the base of the dunes. Along the way, keep your eyes peeled for various wildlife such as deer, foxes, and even, on occasion, a rare black bear. If you're using a navigation device, be sure to keep an extra eye on it. The sandy trail's nature can make it more challenging to stay on track compared to other routes.
Once you reach the dunes, you'll be greeted with an almost lunar landscape. The sandy terrain is constantly shifting and changing due to wind patterns. At the top of the final dune, hikers will find themselves on a narrow ridge that leads straight to Lake Michigan.
Before heading down to Lake Michigan, keep in mind that the return hike to the parking lot near Little Glen Lake will be strenuous. Consider your water supply and how you're feeling before rushing down to frolic in the Great Lake. If you're feeling tired, remember that you can see Little Glen Lake on your return, so your journey will be just as scenic should you decide not to make the climb down to the Lake Michigan side of the dune.
Tackling the Dune Climb in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is truly a bucket list experience in Michigan. Whether you choose to descend to Lake Michigan or simply enjoy the scenery from the ridge, the experience is one-of-a-kind. Always remember to hike responsibly by staying hydrated, pacing yourself, and respecting the natural habitat around you. No matter how far you venture, the beauty of the dunes and the surrounding lakes will create memories you won't soon forget. Feeling inspired?
