Grab the Hand Warmers for This Hike in Massachusetts That’s 100% Worth Braving the Cold
Slip on hand and toe warmers and then circle a pretty lake on this cold-weather hike in Massachusetts that's kid and dog-friendly.
I love winter, well, at least when I’m indoors, toasty under a pile of blankets or in a hoodie. But then I start to feel cooped up and long to spend time outdoors, listening to the crunch of the packed snow under my feet, breathing in the crisp air, and enjoying the quiet of the season. That’s when hand and toe warmers come in handy, helping us stay warm while we explore this pretty cold-weather hike in Massachusetts, a real-life winter wonderland after it snows.
Short and sweet is the way to go when we want to get outside on a cold winter day. The easy 2.4-mile Gates Pond Trail in Berlin is short enough that we don’t have to spend too much time outdoors if we don’t feel like it, but it's still long enough to enjoy an old-fashioned winter adventure. First, though, you have a choice to make if you’re heading out after it snows.
How will you explore this pretty kid-friendly and (leashed) dog-friendly trail? Hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and horseback riding are popular on the Gates Pond Trail. If you decide to hike, wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots to help you navigate the loose rocks on the path. Depending on the weather, you might deal with some mud, too, but those are the biggest obstacles on the well-maintained and predominately flat trail.
The Gates Pond Loop Trail circles the water, promising sensational views from between the branches of the bare trees. You might even be lucky enough to see a few ducks gliding on the water. Every so often, as you embrace the quiet of nature, you’ll likely hear traffic in the distance. The trail can get extremely busy and dogs are popular on it, but the forest path is wide enough to pass by and share with other adventurers.
While the trail is breathtaking when blanketed in snow, add a return visit to your bucket list. Spring and summer promise shades of lush green, wildflowers, and local wildlife, including geese. Bring your camera for an autumn visit when the landscape is painted in vibrant shades of gold, orange, and red.
