Not only is this forest home to the oldest trees in Massachusetts, but you'll find some of the tallest birch trees too! Mohawk Trail State Forest is a magical slice of Massachusetts nature that spans across 6,000 acres.
This beautiful forest dates back to 1921, and is named after a Native trail that connects the Hudson and Connecticut River valleys.
Besides being a gorgeous natural oasis, Mohawk Trail State Forest is home to the oldest trees in Massachusetts.
You'll find some of the hemlocks marked for their old age. The oldest in the forest is a hemlock that's currently 497 years old!
Besides being home to the oldest trees in Massachusetts, Mohawk Trail is also home to the tallest. Also marked is a 167.3-inch white pine tree that's so tall you can't even see the top!
While many of the oldest and tallest trees blend together, it makes for a gorgeous sight as you hike upon one of the many trails within the forest.
