Massachusetts is packed with stunning natural wonders, but some of them aren’t that well known. These gorgeous sea cliffs are a shockingly underrated attraction and one that every Bay Stater should see at least once. Here’s everything you need to know about visiting the cliffs of Aquinnah on Martha’s Vineyard.
The cliffs of Aquinnah are some of the most underrated natural wonders in Massachusetts. In a state that’s known for its unparalleled coastline and impeccable beaches, it’s surprising that more people haven’t heard of these gorgeous, rainbow cliffs.
The Aquinnah Cliffs are located on Martha’s Vineyard. Yes, this means that visiting this attraction will require a ferry ride for most Bay Staters. But trust us — the extra effort is worth it. People from all over the globe are shocked when they see the colorful sand cliffs for the first time. They truly look like something from another realm.
So, what gives these cliffs their unique rainbow look? The cliffs are actually composed of different types of clay. The varying mineral composition of the clays gives each layer a distinct hue. You really appreciate the scale of the cliffs from down on the sand, but the view from the top is unbelievable.
Getting to the cliffs is pretty simple. You can drive out there and park or cycle to the overlook. If you fancy, you can also take a tour bus out to the cliffs. The cliffs are part of Wampanoag Reservation land and you can browse Native crafts and food shops on your way to the overlook.
A visit to the cliffs of Aquinnah is a trip that no Massachusetts native or visitor should miss.
