The Little Known Hiking Path in Massachusetts is Our Favorite First Hike of the Year

Do you plan on making any New Year’s resolutions this year? Getting more exercise and maintaining a healthier lifestyle is consistently a top resolution among Americans (myself included). While I’m not really a gym person and can never seem to give up my obsession with donuts, I realize there are always ways to improve my health. This year I am prioritizing exercise and making this goal a reality by upping my hiking game. And what better time to start than New Year's Day? If you, too, are inspired to do a first-day hike, I have the perfect place for you. Ravenswood Park in Gloucester, Massachusetts, has a little-known hiking trail that is a peaceful spot to kick off a year of fantastic local hiking.

Ravenswood Park comprises 600 acres of scenic land and features 10 miles of wooded trails and paths that were once used by carts. The land was once owned by Samuel Sawyer, a successful businessman and philanthropist, who donated the property, which was filled with woods, pastures, and a swamp, upon his passing. The park is named after the castle in Sir Walter Scott’s book, "The Bride of Lammermoor," and is now managed by the Trustees of Reservations. Please note that while it is free to enter the property, there is limited parking.

There are several great trails to explore at Ravenswood, but the most popular is the Ravenswood Park Trail. This relatively easy path makes it an ideal hike for starting the season. The trail is a 2.5-mile loop with only a 242-foot elevation gain that can be completed in about an hour. I have hiked the trail with my children and found the length and difficulty very doable for families. The path is dog-friendly, so feel free to bring the pups along—however, they must remain on a leash at all times.

A relaxing walk among the serene hemlocks will clear your mind of holiday clutter and make way for a new season of growth. Be sure not to get too lost in your thoughts, as you may encounter some rocks and slippery leaves while hiking. You should wear appropriate footwear for this trail, despite it being easy to travel on and navigate.

Be on the lookout for some historical artifacts while you are at Ravenswood. You may see Native American hunting mounds, colonial rock walls, and even a plaque dedicated to a hermit named Mason A. Walton, who erected a cabin here in 1884. These points of interest are what add to the fascinating nature of this trail and Ravenswood Park.
