Every time I walk down the streets of Boston, I notice something new. Even though I lived in the city for years and still visit often, I am forever amazed at all of the little things I have missed, even in places where I have traveled many times before. There may be a historical plaque, an interesting tree, or a beautiful view, but there is always something new to see. In recent visits to Boston, I have made an effort to slow down my pace and really stop to notice all of these small wonders that make our capital city so unique and special. And my favorite way to do so is by taking a leisurely urban hike. Boston is a wonderfully walkable city with so many beautiful paths to take. The top-rated Charles River Pathway Short Loop is one not to be missed!
This simple pathway walk is a great hike for tourists as well as for Bostonians who are looking for a pretty place to walk. The loop is three miles long and takes just under an hour to complete. It is an easy hike to do with children or those who don't want to take a strenuous walk.
The walkway is paved and there are lots of places to sit down and rest along the way. It is stroller and wheelchair accessible.
The loop will take you to both the Boston and Cambridge sides of the Charles River. Along the way, you will cross several bridges, including the Boston University Bridge and the Longfellow Bridge.
This latter bridge is nicknamed the “salt-and-pepper” bridge because of the shape of its stone towers.
From either side of the river, you will be able to take in some gorgeous city views. Stop to watch the sailboats glide along the water. You may also see swans and geese swim by.
My favorite portion of this amazing hike
is the walk along the Charles River Esplanade. In my opinion, this is one of the most magical places in the whole city. I love to walk among the willow trees, meander through the paths, and just stop and people-watch.
There is always something extraordinary to see here.
Be sure to check out any plaques or monuments that you pass along the way. Whenever I come upon this statue, I always stop to take a closer look.
This massive bust that looks like it is rising up from the ground is a monument to honor former Boston Pop’s conductor, Arthur Fiedler.
You will also see some beautiful smaller bridges along the way. You will definitely want to take some photos against these scenic backdrops.
Have you walked the Charles River Pathway Short Loop? Is there anything that particularly caught your eye along the way? More information on this hike can be found on Alltrails.
If you enjoyed this urban walk and are looking for more great city hikes, I suggest taking the Boston City Walking Trail and the path at the Rose Kennedy Greenway. Other fantastic Massachusetts hikes can be found on our list of the best hikes in Massachusetts. If you are planning to stay overnight in the city, the Copley Square Hotel is a fantastic option that is close to the Charles River Esplanade.
